I had been through a phase in life that I didn’t know which path to take, and I got recommended this book by my mentor. Before reading it, I had had most of my problems figured out; and I found some of my inner thoughts resonating within it. The book reinforces my belief that our utmost concern in life is to direct ourselves towards our core values, and everything else will come along.
Another insight of mine that got reaffirmed by the book was that the way we perceive the world and act upon it have more to say about us than the world. In other words, the way people treat you is most likely a reflection of them and not a reflection of you. This insight is beautifully captured in the following quote:
> When we hate someone, what we hate is something in him, or in our image of him, that is part of ourselves. Nothing that isn’t in us ever bothers us.
I found this book extremely tedious to read because of its overuse of symbolism and an obscure plot. It’s hard to follow Sinclair’s flows of thoughts when they weren’t tied to any events but just dreams and half-baked mysteries. Sinclair’s sexual desire was even more confusing. I did not enjoy this book, despite its overwhelming positive reviews among the readers.
