The Shooting Star
by Hergé
My first Tintin book! Surely not my last though, after the innocent fun and adventure I witnessed here. It's funny that I never liked the "clean line" art style of Hergé growing up. It was the same with Asterix and Obelix, and you always had the danger that the words would all be in French too. No, I stuck with the Beano and it served me well.
Now though I find the art's simple style very endearing. I also like how Snowy the dog and Tintin are always talking to each other, even though they can't understand each other (Kirsty pointed out the similarity to Seinfeld here). Captain Haddock made me laugh, being the sneakily alcoholic head of the Society of Sober Sailors. Best of all though, I loved the adventure. It really felt like we were on board for some mystery and fun.
The plot is relatively simple. Tintin observes an extra star in Ursa Major and runs to the observatory. It is deemed by the boffins to be a shooting star containing a never-before-seen metal, and an expedition to its Arctic landing zone is launched. Malevolent forces are against them though, as a nefarious profiteer is out to claim it first! Wound around all this intrigue are some japes and larks, with the ever-capable straight man Tintin being backed up by Snowy and Captain Haddock.
Kirsty got me this for Christmas 2021!
