A Tale of Two Cities
by Charles Dickens
I just finished a re-read of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This is a story of identity, love, revenge, and sacrifice. I really enjoyed the character change by Sidney Carton by the end of the novel. Sidney Carton’s change is evidence that one can turn things around and be a light to someone else in the world.
As usual, Dickens makes a social comment. In A Tale of Two Cities, he blames the caste system, specifically the upper echelon/rich, as being the primary cause of the French Revolution. His dark descriptions in the city of Paris throughout the Revolution are eye-opening, and so jarring, they made me uncomfortable as a reader witness to the events he supplied his readers.
The story is hard to follow in certain parts and like Bleak House it seems that Dickens just starts on new tangents that seem to have nothing to do with the overall plot, but he somehow brings the storylines back together. That definitely makes for hard reading at times!
This is the second Dickens novel I’ve read this year, and I’m in a good place with his literary style right now. I still have some other big ones of his to read - Our Mutual Friend comes to mind - and I really want to jump into another one. I used to believe I could only take one Dickens novel per year, but I think I’m past that now!
