Latecomers by Anita Brookner

4.0

My first Anita Brookner, loved it. I had some hesitation at first, but she's really formidable, she's an artist. To be sure, it's a world of white privilege and aspirational middle-class. But she has a big, humane heart, her vocabulary is remarkable for its precision, she's unafraid of seasoning her prose with French and German (she's a Brexiteer worst nightmare, all that continental glamour) and definitely a great companion for the current lockdown.
