The concept behind this is masterful — telling background or side stories that the original film didn’t tell, and/or retelling some of the same scenes but from different characters’ points of view — and the implementation was well-done. Though some of the stories were fairly weak, plenty were strong and the overall effect (assuming the reader is already a Star Wars fan) is enjoyable.
