The Only Harmless Great Thing
by Brooke Bolander
it's hard to put an opinion to this when half of the book was spent confused on the POV switches. it's about the elephants' pasts (mythology style), the radium girls x topsy the elephant, and the nihilistic future of negotiation between human and elephant.
honestly, i mostly saw this as a critique of capitalism, but i wish it'd only focused on the radium/elephant time period. the elephant lore and the future portions just felt like... too much? maybe? i do like the acknowledgement of how the future shapes history into commodity though.
"Death decayed into history decayed into poolside anecdote. Francium wishes it had a half-life as short as tragedy’s."
