abomine 's review for:
Julie of the Wolves
by John Schoenherr, Jean Craighead George
Perfect Musical Pairing: They're All Gone by James Newton Howard (from Disney's Dinosaur)
---------------------
While the anti-technology message and wolfaboo attitude towards wolves docked some stars, this was a very well-written and moving read. The depictions of wolf pack behavior seemed pretty spot-on, the Alaskan setting was immersive, and Miyax/Julie was a strong lead character.
What I'd like to know, though, is why the hell this has been marketed as a children's book! There were some things going on in this book that I don't think are appropriate for a 7-10 year-old reading level.Tragic animal deaths are nothing new to children's and middle grade fiction, but rape? And of a child bride, no less! Granted, it wasn't nearly as graphic as it could have been, but I still think that was really pushing it for young readers.
What with the growth of the BookTube community and a popular subgenre being YA, I feel that this book is ripe for a shiny new re-release targeted at young adults. This book deserves a wide readership, and I think that a bittersweet coming of age story on the Alaskan tundra with majestic wolves and a strong female lead will definitely find an audience with teen readers.
