Imagine a young Parisian, walking an island near France, stopping to ask an older gentleman for directions. The traveler learns the older gentleman is an American who remained in France following World War II. A friendship emerges in which the Parisian inks the older gentleman’s wartime stories within a celebrated graphic novel.

That’s what you get with Alan’s War, Emmanuel Guibert’s biography of Alan Cope. The rightful winner of numerous awards and accolades, including recognition as an NPR and PW Book of the Year, I found Alan’s War a beautifully drawn, warmly written account of one GI’s wartime experiences.
