rosierivets 's review for:
A Slow Fire Burning
by Paula Hawkins
I liked this better than The girl on the train, mostly because the characters, while still flawed, are so much less awful. I've been having trouble with thrillers, they stress me out, and this one didn't do that. It was quick and interesting, but there was something nagging at me. I read a harsh review from the Washington Post and, while I think the article was overly critical (dull, bland, banal, slow--ouch), I do think that's part of it. The part I did like was Hawkins occasionally having the characters poke fun at thrillers, mostly mocking tropes Hawkins herself uses.
