Trust, fear, betrayal, hurt, strength, independence, freedom, self-discovery, justice. This book had my emotions in a vise grip and had my heart pounding with anticipation. Aura and Ruby’s instantaneous connection and understanding of each other made the fight to survive all the more intense.
The way Aura grew up, with the brainwashing, fear induced loyalty, manipulation, false love, made her more susceptible to others outside of that world. Until she met Ruby. Things became clear, people’s masks start to fall, and she starts to question everything. Aura thought she got away from her past, but unbeknownst to her, it’s closer than she thinks.
Ruby is a fighter, through and through. Her strength and will to protect those around her from the evil that lies beneath is admirable. Trying to distance herself from her parents and the life she was apart of, she does things she knows they would approve of. And she become liberated and finds herself and the freedom she sought out for.
Both Aura’s and Ruby’s past come crashing down in a monumental way and their pasts are connected in a way neither of them thought possible. The lies, secrets, excruciating pain, unjustified power, start to unravel and expose the dark, twisted, and cruel truth.
“To everyone who has been forced into boxes they’ve had to fight their way out of.”
“She laughs against my ear as she pulls back, and instinctually I end up leaning forward, refusing to end it this quickly. Because I feel something, a connection, a tether, a magnetic draw that’s clouding my mind and replacing my guilty thoughts for just a moment. I need it. The breath. She’s the clean air my mind is craving. It’s in her energy, in the space around us and between us and I can’t explain it in the way that it deserves.”
“You know, I’m usually not into the clingy types. You get too close and I might burn you,” I whisper into the narrow space between us. Because it’s true. I’m all fire and she’s all wind. I spark and burn while she whips through the air in fleeting moments of temptation.”
“Every beat of the song, every word I let drift through me. Let it consume my mind and my movements while I completely give myself over to the vibe of it all. But I look again, scouring across the faceless people ahead of me for the only eyes I actually want to connect with. Black, lethal eyes that awaken my demons. Those are the ones I want to devour me.”
“I'll always fight for her, and I think that in this moment where our fears were plastered right in front of our faces, we've learned to cling to each other. Always fighting for each other. Even in fear. Even in chaos. Always each other.”
