(A SPOILER-FREE REVIEW)
Representation: Mc is queer but it is not really spoken about or highlighted. Moreover, some of the side characters are transgender and queer.
Tropes: Friends to lovers.
Trigger warning: Drug abuse, anxiety, body horror, depression, and nonconsensual enchantment.
A really long time ago, I saw a video listing five books that had love interests that reminded the booktoker of Howl from Howl's Moving Castle. THUS, it has been my goal since stumbling across that video to read most, if not all, of the books on their list and this book just so happened to be one of them.
This book mostly focused on Clara and Xavier's past friendship, and I found it lacking in terms of the connection they were trying to cultivate as teenagers. Her opinion of him relied a lot on who he used to be as opposed to who he is now. Which is why I found the romance plot line of this book lacking.
3.5/5 stars, I wanted to like this book a lot more then I did, but it is a great light hearted fantasy and does give How'ls Moving Castle vibes.
