Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

Should've read content warnings beforehand.

A story that tests the sympathy for victims who experience very real alienation when society fails them-- and then descend into Kafkaesque madness where humanism means nothing anymore. Earthlings is both a powerful critique of the cultural expectations of women (primarily) in society (read the Kawaii-voice of the acceptably feminine quirky narrate the most twisted subversions/violences imaginable), and a grimdark horror story that elicits shock, possibly more than anything else. This book goes to the provocative extremes until there's nothing but a bleak end left.
