The Suspect
by Fiona Barton
3.5* rounded down
Audiobook.
Even though the storyline was good enough the characters just seemed to lack depth. That could be because this is book #3, as the characters would be old friends by now, but this was meant to be a standalone.
I also feel like maybe if I was a orient I’d be able to connect more, but it just seemed like we weren’t focusing on enough on the girls themselves. I wish they had been the narrator more often, or even had another character narrating the Thailand scenes.
It also seemed a tiny bit preachy at times, or at least “drugs always = terrible things” without enough detail into the why form those taking them.
Basically, not interested enough to read her other two but no regrets in listening to it.
If you like a “who done it?!” Which actually makes sense at the end, or a book where you’re wanting to tell the charters what they don’t yet know, you’ll probably enjoy this. It just didn’t hit hard enough on the grief for me or go into detail into the complexity of family relationships, the sexualisation of young girls or drug culture.
