I had wanted to read this book for so long. I last read 'Huckleberry Finn' around three years ago, in preparation for reading Finn. It was worth the wait and I couldn't put it down. Although I don't think it is completely necessary to read 'Huck' before hand.
Clinch cleverly takes the material we were given by Twain, in (I think) Chapter 9 of 'Huck', and weaves an entirely new story from it. Finn is a character shaped by the environment of the Mississippi river and the hatreds and prejudices passed to him by his father 'The Judge', and the attitudes to slavery. (I kept getting Night of the Hunter in my head)
This is a brutal and violent story of a hard-core alcoholic.
