The Golden Key
by George MacDonald
As literature, the words themselves weren’t bad, but they were not captivating. And the story seemed disjointed, a series of events rather than a cohesive whole. Maurice Sendak’s illustrations did a disservice to the text in my opinion. All that said, I enjoyed it. One, it made me feel like I could write fairy tales, simply letting my dreams dictate them. Also, I think W. H. Auden’s afterword put it into words for me: “George MacDonald’s most extraordinary, and precious, gift is his ability, in all his stories, to create an atmosphere of goodness about which there is nothing phony or moralistic.”
