A Demon Made Me Do It by Penelope King

4.0

I got a copy for review in exchange for an honest review.

3 stars or 4 stars, I was debating what to give this book throughout reading it, in the end I decided I liked the book enough to give it 4 stars. I will explain more later. I think the blurb gives a slightly different idea of where the book is about. The book is about Liora a human girl, who is a bit anti-social and only has one friend in school. Further she is really smart and therefore finds school boring as hell. When night falls she changes in Lucky, a demon who then inhabits Liora's body while Liora sleeps. Well inhabits Liora's body is not really the right description, they are the same person but instead of being half human and half demon she is literaly half human and half demon. Both person aren't aware what happens when the other is awake, but hey where once one. Okay I am making this sound very complicated :p. So when it is day we get to see Liora struggling through school and when it's night Lucky is in charge and goes to the demon rhealm.

I really like the idea behind the story, a girl with a demon inside her, literaly. I love original stories and this story was certainly original. The beginning immediately captured my attention, but after that it became a bit slow. Liora's days are a bit boring at first, she just goes to school and feels annoyed. I was looking forward to the nights when Lucky was in charge. And then a gorgeous new guy comes along who only has eyes for Liora and there we have instant love. I do not like love at first sight so I was thinking of giving this book a 3 stars then. Afterward their relationship develops quite normally so I was feeling a bit better about the book. Also things are happening in the demon rhealm and the story got more interesting. So again thinking of 4 stars.

The only thing I really miss in this book is explanation. What are demons exactly? what is the demon rhealm (this is the name I made up for it because I keep forgetting the term the book uses)? what are the different factions/areas of demons? they have wars with each other but why are they different? I think it is more like different countries but I am not 100% sure. And what is Tatiana exactly? Liora lives with Tatiana, Tatiana is a witch of some sort, but what exactly? And why does Liora lives with Tatiana? we get some insight in this question but I still don't really understand why tatiana choose to take Lucky in her house.

Then the characters. The charcaters are surpisingly well developed. At first they came off as a bit shallow, but as the book progresses I came to like them more and more. We get to know much about Liora and lucky's feelings but also get some sense of who the people around them are. And even if we don't get much information I still have the sense that I have some idea who they are. I also liked the romance and friendschips in this book, apart from the love at first sight. I really liked Bones and Kieron!

Another point I have to mention is that sometimes there was a bit too much focus on certain emotions and sometimes too less.
Spoiler I found Lucky taking the death of her best friend Ivy a bit too easy. While she was truggling a bit too much with her feelings for Bones and Kieron

To conclude: this is a really nice book. Only minpoints are the love at first sight and some lack of world building. I really liked the story and the originality of it and the characters where likeable too. I am looking forward to the next book in this series!
