neontangerine 's review for:
Binding 13
by Chloe Walsh
CW: domestic violence, allusions to CSA, child abuse/neglect, pregnancy loss, substance abuse and bullying
I wasn't quite sure what to make of this book at first. I normally don’t read YA—I rarely pick up things YA/adult crossover honestly. This book was nothing like I expected—and I mean that in the best way. At first I thought it would be some kind of She’s All That knock off, with a pick me as hell FMC and flat MC. Shannon comes off as a pick me at first, and she might just be the author’s reflection of girls who are “not like other girls,” but these characters have depth. Johnny was shockingly complex, he has heaps of his own trauma that I’m curious to see if it gets explored in book 2. The author explores some insanely complicated and sensitive subjects in this novel and nothing about how she tells the story is cookie cutter or felt cliche. I honestly thought this book was very good—the cliffhanger is what is throwing me off. We do not get a nice clean ending, so you know I’ve already started the sequel. I’ll come back and rate this book once I’ve finished #2. I can’t finalize my feelings until I know how it ends. *UPDATE* Read the sequel, this duology is a must read. We get a resolution and *spoiler* you fall even more in love with Shannon and Johnny in the next book.
