High School by Tegan Quin, Sara Quin

5.0

This book is exquisite. Its release was accompanied by a live performance which including readings and music in an intimate setting. That performance was flawless and I launched headfirst into this book just after. I highly recommend to everyone and it’s a must read for all fans of Tegan and Sara. I did the audio version which includes demos of many songs at the end of most chapters. It adds to the book greatly, though it would still be moving in print without the demo clips. You can’t go wrong with the audio though and the authors are absolute naturals at narrating! To anyone who was ever grappling with their sexual identity, to anyone who has a coming out story, to every lesbian, hell to anyone who went through high school, listen and you will be brought back to the pain and the joy of those moments. High school is a time where one thinks they know everything, that they are invincible and that every experience is life or death, feelings so deep and inescapable. Tegan and Sara capture this with raw honesty in retelling their own story. I commend their bravery immensely. The way they turned to music as an outlet for all of that teenage angst, heartache and uncertainty is fascinating. First in hearing them relay in detail their own musical inspirations and then as they become songwriters themselves. I will hear their music differently from now on, with so much gained insight into their own story of making these songs come to life and making it in the music industry. Another aspect of the book is of course that they are twin sisters, which all else aside may make this an interesting story for science/genetics fans.
