Three consequtive stories in one, each book part is progressively better than the first. Unfortunately the first is a trainwreck, whose more interesting components fail to pay off beyond the most telegraphed of tropes. The author frequently demonstrates they don't trust you, or themselves, by undercutting genuinely interesting moments with direct explanations of the themes, emotions, twists, or even the jokes.

This is made worse by a plot that, especially in the first half feels forced. The narrative is squished to fit it's role as a vehicle for the authors philosophical perspectives on revolutions.

If this sounds harsh it is because when these flaws recede, you are left with an author's talented in the journalistic skill of summarizing technical jargon from both natural and computer science. When combined with the imaginative, distinct, and engaging world of the Terraformers, you have a story with true potential. Potential, that if the author trusted the reader, could have made for a truly standout title.
