Heidi by Johanna Spyri
2.0

Heidi is such a sweet kid, I almost cried a couple times. I'm sure it was a darling little book for children (preferably girls?) throughout several generations. But my cynicism has projected a bunch of gloom over my reading experience.

Thank goodness Heidi received shelter and a loving family in the tiny secluded Swiss mountain village. She wouldn't stand a chance in this day and age.

Note: I do not recommend this book for its medical advice. (Oh, your child is wheelchair-bound with maybe another Victorian ailment? Send her up a mountain, stuff her full of cheese and goat milk, and toss her wheelchair off the mountain--but preferably not with her in it. Force her to walk and toughen up.) Fresh air and sunshine cure everything. And lots of dairy products.

Also, a lot of non-denominational religious terms get bandied about in this book.

Altogether wholesome yet also too sugary for my taste.
