The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

challenging dark emotional sad slow-paced

5.0

I'll be the first to admit that this is a book that was never on my radar, and was never a book that any of my advanced English teachers had on the syllabus for us (stereotyping? it's possible...), but this book got to me in ways I never expected.

Problematic language that definitely didn't age well aside, I definitely understand why this is a book that has stuck it out through the ages and how and why it could be inspiring. It openly shows young adults and young men emotionally vulnerable, it shows some positive male bonding (again, not all of it, but there are hints of it), and it does a good job of reminding the reader that this whole thing is only from one perspective and that, as with everything, we need to take a step back and try to see things through others eyes. I think, especially for the time period when this came out, this is an incredibly powerful story that they should have in the curriculum across the board, not just in the classes with the students they think will see themselves in the outsiders shoes.

I definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone, just make sure you have some tissues on hand!
