The Children of Men
by P.D. James
A powerful and thought provoking look at the fragile end of humanity. With no more pregnancy and an ever ageing population the country is controlled and steered to a purposeful end by a government ruled by one man. Speculation on the nature of God, religion, humanity and power just about keep the story going with a small band of characters and a charming not entirely evil leader. Complex and engaging though does lack pace at times.
I have to say, despite the feelings of the characters in the book the government and the choices they've made don't actually seem that unreasonable. An avoidance of crime and violence and a reduction to the aspects of life that are going to matter as the world's population slowly shuffles off with a whisper. Maybe the fact that it seems to reasonable makes it all the more worrying.
I did feel the film was better (though the updated themes worked better than the context of the early 90s when this was written).
