Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson
4.0

Back, over a decade ago, I attempted to read two of Robinson's other works, namely Red Mars and The Years of Rice and Salt and I bounced off both, hard! I became convinced that he could ruin pretty much any idea. For example, if you'd have given him Star Wars, he'd have ignored all the heroes, the politics, the wars and instead focused on two sanitation engineers in the Death Star, with long diatribes about how the dynamic gravity of a large moving space station that is sometimes close to planets affects the toilets flushing.

But I saw this on sale and thought, my tastes have matured, maybe I'll like it. After all, I'd also bounced off Benford's Timescape and when I read it recently I loved it. So sod it, I'll give it a shot.

And you know what? I really enjoyed it. Sure, there was a lot of 'sanitation engineers on the Death Star' going on but instead of hating that I found it really interesting. It made me think that maybe I should attempt the other books again.

If you're wanting to read this because you want a huge, incredible voyage of discovery, then don't. It's not that. It's really not that and I don't want to get into why it isn't that as it'll involve spoilers. But what it is, is a very good book with some good characters and a lot of intelligent problem solving. If that's your bag then go for it.
