Bea Wolf by Zach Weinersmith

4.0

I'm torn because I did like this book but I'm not like in love with it. A retelling of Beowulf (obviously) and the monster in Bea Wolf is Grindle, a scowling neighbor tired of the neighborhood kids noise. He's nearly identical to Grendel except he doesn't eat people's heads. Instead he turns kids into old, boring, fun-haters, which is almost as bad. I enjoyed the black & white line art. The author's take on Old English is interesting, a good vocabulary builder (ha!) and probably a good one to read aloud, but makes it maybe less accessible for some kids to read on their own. I have never read Beowulf and probably never will. Had to look up what Fitt stood for. Learned a lot :P
