Ketzel, the Cat Who Composed by Lesléa Newman
4.0

Make sure to bring up Ketzel's song to listen to after reading, because it really is quite charming. It should be easy enough to find on YouTube, and it will help your child to understand the style Ketzel's owner champions.

This is a book about music, but not as we traditionally think. Not the classical of old or the new lyric-driven media, but a less looked-to but still vibrant modernist tradition. It might not be to everyon'es taste, but it's worth some exploration.

The artwork here is suitably cute, without being...cutesy. It's done in a realistic manner, which is all the cute that any kitten needs.

I do wish this had come with a small CD of Moshe Cotel's works, but the licensing was probably an issue. Oh well. :/ At least that keeps the cost down a bit, and you can find plenty of his stuff online.

Try this out as the beginning of a unit on modern music. Challenge your kids to make music that their own pets might make. Just be sure they don't break the instruments. ;p
