Calling for a Blanket Dance by Oscar Hokeah

3.0

I have read quite a few intergenerational family novels and normally appreciate them and the pieces they bring to the whole, but this one did an odd thing and often had chapters named for certain people in the family but then spent the whole chapter talking about other people (normally the main character Ever or his mom Turtle), as if recounting things they’d heard - often in very specific detail as if it were their own life, though they were not there - and not really adding anything about the person the chapter was named after. Very odd. I don’t really get what was the point of doing that, as it didn’t really add anything to the story to have these different people continue to recount the narrative of others. That was my main gripe. And also that there wasn’t particularly a cohesive arc or compelling story, in my opinion. Just kind of things happening.
