We watched a Great Courses class on Eastern Europe by University of Tennessee history professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius who highly recommended this book. It details the trials and tribulations of the titular soldier Svejk, a Czech warrior in the Austrian army in the First World War. Svejk never met a situation that didn't remind him of someone that he used to know and who inspired another shaggy dog tale. Recommended.
