Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce

4.0

This book was recommended to me years ago, and it did not disappoint! I love that Alanna (Alan) is a strong, female protagonist. She does what the other pages and squires do, and is able to hold her own. She perseveres in the face of adversity, and practices her areas of weakness until they become her strengths. I enjoyed the camaraderie between Alanna, George, Jon, and the squires. And that George and Jon are not bothered by finding out her secret.

While I feel that time passed and most events happened at a smooth and believable pace, the adventure at the end of the novel happened too quickly, to the point where I am skeptical about many things. SPOILER ALERT!!!

Was it really Jon that fought alongside Alanna or was it Duke Roger posing as Jon to find out Alanna's secrets? Jon did not seem to be himself when talking to Mathub. Were the Immortals actually immortals, or beings conjured up by Roger? Will Alanna (and Jon) always intrinsically know how and when to use magic that they've never had practice using? What exactly was the Black City and what is its purpose?

I guess I'll have to continue reading to hopefully find out some of these answers.
