Sister Heart by Sally Morgan
5.0

This book hurt my heart.

In some ways it's really easy to read, the poetry is beautiful and flows through a simple story. It is also hard to read. It will leave you feeling like you've been punched in the stomach. In part, it's just a sad story, the use of the verse novel is a fantastic method for sharing the pain of this part of our history. But more than this, Sister Heart is an intense and difficult read because we all know there are not happy endings to the stories of the Stolen Generation, that the trauma and damage done is ongoing and intergenerational and that Australia is set on continuing these injustices without much reflection or remorse.

The importance and value of sharing the emotional stories of our dark history is evident in Sister Heart, and because of it, I think this is a book everyone, regardless of age, should read. In addition to all that, it is incredibly well written and a beautiful contribution to Australian literature.
