Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two by John Tiffany

3.0

This book bothered me. I felt it was too short and everything was way too convenient. Maybe it was the play format, but things happened too fast and I felt "out of the loop". It felt like a rushed fan fiction, really. I mean, it was nice to see Harry and the rest again, but I think the series should've ended with the 7th book. It seemed like they were trying to mash all the fans' expectations into one play/novel, and it did not go well. I mean, the "Voldemort has a child" theory, the ship of Scorpius with Rose, and the question about "why didn't they use the time turners" were all included...each one of those topics could've covered just one book! All the twists made me say, Seriously?

And what about Teddy Lupin? And Victoire? And Luna and Rolf's twin boys? In fact, James and Lily (Jr) were barely in it at all! This book misled me into believing it would be a story about a year at Hogwarts, but it was just two boys trying to prove themselves, going on an adventure.

Also, at the beginning, I don't feel empathy towards Albus. I didn't mind if anything happened to him. When he grows emotionally, I start rooting for him more, but to be honest, I much prefer Scorpius. I mean, Albus seemed to have a much better relationship with Harry in the Deathly Hallows than in this one. Also with James...maybe it's because he's becoming a teenager...

Overall, though, it's a nice addition to my Harry Potter collection. It's just a bit of a stretch to call it the 8th book. It's not the worst read, I just can't seem to take it too seriously. But the play format was actually pretty cool, it was different. And I do like the evolution of Harry, Draco, Albus, and Scorpius's relationships throughout the book, which was, of course, the main point, so I'll forgive the lesser-quality plot. It sends a sweet message, and also silences the people who yell at JK, "Why didn't Harry use the time turner to get rid of Voldemort?"

I'll wrap my review up with these final words: good idea. Not so good execution.
