Language Families of the World by John McWhorter

informative inspiring fast-paced

5.0

I absolutely LOVED this course. The content was very interesting, but like any properly good class, the professor really sold it.

Passion is so important in education - you can tell if a teacher doesn't care about the topic. McWhorter not only cares about languages, but he is over-the-moon excited to share it with anyone who will listen. The course is filled with apologies for imperfect pronunciations on complex languages and references to native speakers for a better example. I also appreciate the way he called out insensitive terminology in the field referring to various native and indigenous groups. It was an honest, enthusiastic course.

I feel like I learned so much about world linguistics. I went back and re-listened to some lectures because I felt like there was SO MUCH and I didn't want to miss a word. This is a lecture series I will definitely revisit. McWhorter knows his topic well and has inspired me to want to know more.
