Five Dark Fates
by Kendare Blake
Pros: Subverts quite a few tropes, themes, and narrative structure decisions found not only in YA but books in general. Dramatic. Catching. Extended war preparation and action scenes. Distinctive characters. Consideration taken to character dynamics. Complex relationships- romantic, platonic, adversarial. In retrospect, though maybe not initially, a very satisfactory conclusion to a series.
Cons: some scenes and ending may seem abrupt. Some relationships may seem inconclusive. There are some rushed narrative bits that adjust the tone but seem necessary to conclude the narrative within a page range. Not troubled personally in reflection, but it may bother some readers.
