while i might have constructive criticism, this is a solid, fun and astoindingly charming book.
it captures the feeling of being a teen in high school with honestly, care and absolutely no condescension. sadie reads like i, many times, felt during those years, and in a really interesting way. it's often difficult to find a book that can toe the line of depicting teens as children and as the adults they are becoming, and this story does it really well. this may honestly be the most impressive point i have to share about this book.
the story is a little predictable, but it doesn't take anything from the experience - the characters are so colorful and obviously loved by the author that the simplicity of the events only lets them shine brighter.
julius is so fun to read about, especially because a lot of things were obvious from the start but sadie, being his peer, would never think to make the connections.
the emails themselves were terrifying but also really fun. i had to put the book down a couple of times from second hand embarrassment, but once the story was rolling and the initial shock thawed a little, the rest of the book was a breeze.
this was a great way to spend my saturday. vibes-wise, this books makes me want to rewatch kaichou wa maid-sama (do with that information what you will).
i'm also a really big fan of the chinese interpesed a few times in the story and the depictions of chinese immigrant neighborhoods.
the book is really good and i'll be recommending it loudly to my best friend (and to everyone who stumbles upon this review).
