Я просто не знаю з чого почати.
Це надзвичайно добре написана книга, з чудовими описами. Тепер я можу уявити, як виглядав Бомбей того часу. Я зміг побачити кольори, відчути тепло, насолодитися смаками та запахами. Я спав у Колабі, обідав у Леопольді, і катався на конях на пляжі Юху. У мене пішло два місяці, щоб прочитати її. Я просто не міг взяти і “проковтнути” цю книгу одним махом. Та і я впевнений, що протягом декількох років я обов'язково читати її знову. Вона занадто маштабна, в цій книзі так багато речей, які я досі прокручую в голові, так багато деталей і описів із змістовними повідомленнями.
Шантарам є обов'язковим для читання з багатьох причин. І не дозволяйте розміру книги завадити вам. Вона, безумовно, попадає в мій топ-10.
Я вибрав кілька улюблених уривків, які дійсно вплинули на мене:
"Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we can never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them."
"I'd always thought that fate was something unchangeable: fixed for every one of us at birth, and as constant as the circuit of the stars. But I suddenly realised that life is stranger and more beautiful than that. The truth is that, no matter what kind of game you find yourself in, no matter how good, or bad the luck, you can change your life completely with a single thought or a single act of love."
“A man has to find a good woman, and when he finds here to win her love. Then he has to earn her respect. Then he has to cherish her trust. And then he has to, like, go on doing that for as long as they live. Until they both die. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the most important thing in the world. That’s what a man is. A man is truly a man when he wins the love of a good woman, earns her respect, and keeps her trust. Until you can do that, you’re not a man.”
