After the Witch Hunt by Megan Falley

4.0

A friend gifted this collection of poems to me for my birthday. I was pleasantly surprised by the fantastic nature of Falley’s poems. Several people have referred to the word “gut-punch” when discussing her work. While this is true, it should be noted that this is not a negative interpretation. Rather, these poems are heavily realistic – realistic about the social issues women face, about love and loss, about family and nostalgia, about surviving. While there were a few poems that did fall flat or paled in comparison to the star pieces of this collection, it’s clear Falley is talented and growing poet. I can’t wait to read future collections from her.

Poems from this collection that I recommend: “Family,” “Fat Girl,” “The Pink Ribbon Parade,” the combination of “The First Time I Met His Mother, Christmas Eve” and “The Last Time I Met His Mother, Valentine’s Day,” and “Irrational Anthem.”
