Walk on Earth a Stranger
by Rae Carson
This book has an interesting blend of genres. The fantasy isn't very prominent in the story, at least not in the traditional sense. The only fantastical element is Lee's ability to sense gold. I think it blended well with the setting of Gold Rush-era America. Good use of setting!
The plot wasn't action-packed. Instead it was more of a journey-based story, detailing the trials Lee went through to get to California. I liked the exploration of the journey to the West and how difficult it was so long ago. The U.S. is a lot bigger when you don't have cars or airplanes to get where you're going.
I liked Lee! She's a very strong woman trying to find her way in a world that blocks women from really finding their potential. I like the side characters too, but I feel like there wasn't much to them. We see a lot of slivers of development, but I don't yet feel like they are fully-fleshed characters. I wasn't particular invested when people died.
Still, I like the story and am interested in the rest of the series!
