as a sequel, this felt very much like the second half of a boss fight. we know WHAT the monster is, now we have to find out HOW to kill it. unfortunately, that mystery ended up being less engaging than the suspense of book one. rather than being straight up and down gothic, it went into threads of possession and monster fighting that kind of confused the sense of subgenre. i still had a good time, just didn’t devour this one quite like the first.
