This review doesn't contain many specific spoilers, but if you haven't read the book yet, you shouldn't read any reviews.

I first read this book in 7th grade English class and remember being really affected by it. I read it again 7 or 8 years ago, and then again this time. I do think that it is a little bit confusing for a kids' book, but that part of that is due to the time that it was written. Additionally, some of the themes and ideas don't come across that well due to the pacing and the fact that the way that the story is very meandering. I also felt like it there was a lot that was left out -- what happened during all of those years? What was their relationship like with Caroline during those decades?

I love this book a lot for many reasons and have found myself thinking about it a lot during the past 15 years or so since I first read it in middle school, and I am  sure part of that is nostalgia, but the book is just great.
