If on a Winter's Night a Traveler
by Italo Calvino
This reminds me of an episode of some 90s sitcom I can't remember the title of. It basically was about a couple of kids trying to break a number of world records, failing each time. They then realize that they had actually beaten the world record of failed world record attempts. It really feels like the author actually had a bunch of great story beginnings and was not sure how to continue them... and then came up with the brilliant idea of this format.
It is one of the very best post-modern novels I've read. It's weird, in a good way, and it keeps you engaged throughout. It truly feels like an out-of-body experience... Read it if you enjoy meta fiction and ruminations on reading and writing.
