Verses for the Dead
by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
After a few meandering and relatively melodramatic entries in the series, Pendergast roars back to life in this lean, taut, unpredictable thriller. There’s nothing supernatural here, no Constance moping about, no Pendergast family skeletons lurching from closets, no shadowy organizations bent on covering up their nefarious activities, no mines or caves or creatures of the night. Just a serial killer, a fast car, a few hungry reptiles, and a new partner for the enigmatic Pendergast. It felt like the authors were having fun with the series after a period in the doldrums.
