A Cowboy to Remember
by Rebekah Weatherspoon
Yvonne ‘Evie’ Buchanan is a hotshot chef who’s trying to leave her past behind. When she loses all her memories after a fall, she ends up right back at the ranch she grew up on - with the childhood sweetheart she hasn’t spoken to in 10 years.
Rebekah Weatherspoon wrote a really enjoyable cast of side characters. I love the Pleasants (especially Miss Leona), Evie’s friends really seem to care about her, and even Vega The Nurse is a nice addition to the ensemble. The banter is laugh-out-loud funny and there are several explicitly queer characters, which I really appreciated.
The actual central romance felt a bit flimsy. I wish we had gotten more of Evie and Zach’s backstory and them building a new relationship where Zach makes her fall in love all over again. As it was, I didn’t really get why they were so infatuated with each other. And them jumping right into a physical relationship when she had zero memories of the reasons for their decade-long estrangement felt a bit strange. The amnesia plot could have been fleshed out more and Melanie felt like a caricature of a villain.
All in all, I enjoyed myself, but I probably won’t be rereading.
