This is a fun and imaginative debut novel.

The characters are interestingly broken and that is one of the things that brings them together. The dialogue is rife with sassy banter throughout the story. It really adds some amusing color to some scenes with more difficult conversations and subjects. Chosen/found family is one of the greater themes in this book. We see it play out in different ways showing that family isn’t always made through blood.

In future books, would like to see a little more back story for Ryder and Saskia. I feel like they were given some great one liners but robbed of a proper backstory. A larger explanation of the magic system would also help with the world building instead of the random scattering of breadcrumbs that are so far not connected to many things. Like with is magic banned in some places but not in others?

Lastly, I love of ruthlessly bloodthirsty and unapologetic both Elowen and Cayden are. There is guilt but they also never shirk from what needs to be done.
