The Steadfast Heart by Arlem Hawks
4.0

A novella length story inspired by the Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen.
Royal Naval Lieutenant Robert Brenton lost his foot at Trafalgar and has returned home intending to retire to his humble country estate.

He sees Miss Holly Addison, his friend's sister at a ball and is captivated by her grace and beauty.

They are thrown together by circumstances relating to Holly's failed betrothal and come to know and develop tender feelings for one another.

I was impressed by the quality of writing, especially describing Robert's emotions. The dialogue flowed and felt historically accurate. The story was satisfying, with plenty of conflict that was tidily resolved.

In the beginning I thought Holly's character was self-centred and not particularly likeable. I found it hard to see what Robert liked about her other than her physical attributes. She did soften up a bit toward the end though which redeemed her a little for me.
