Cari Mora by Thomas Harris
2.0

I went into the book with great expectations and was thoroughly underwhelmed.

-The book started great! Hans-Peter is ambitious, daring and psychotic enough. And Cari Mora catches his eye. The tone set for the book here was dark, gritty and horrifying. But after their initial interactions, those two don't meet at all! There isn't any chance to build fear in Cari about Hans. His incinerator had no role here. Or his house in general. His death too was not satisfying. By the end, Hans-Peter was nothing more than a human trafficker who died a basic death.
-Though her name IS the title, Cari Mora was hardly in the book. Her back story was flushed out very well, but in the present day, she hardly had any role. The book seemed to revolve more around Don Ernesto and Hans-Peter.
-There were two stories developing side by side: first, the treasure and second Hans-Peter's plan for Cari. But the second one was not developed well, and wasn't given time to build itself too.
-Side characters: The initial crew that got killed off had not much impact on the overall storyline. Neither did the crew that came with Candy. They were severely under utilised.

Overall, the plot was great and so much could have been done with it. This is the first Thomas Harris book I've read(I've watched the movies though) and this wasn't what I expected
