Crown of Stars by K.A. Knight

Did not finish book. Stopped at 18%.
DNF @ 18%

I should’ve known that KA Knight can’t be trusted to write a sci-fi epic.

the love interests are emo and edgy and so annoying; exactly what i DON’T want. Saffron is obsessed with saying she’s “not like other princesses” while doing every stupid thing she can think of. right from the beginning her planet lets invaders just waltz in and everyone is so obsessed with stressing how she’s so beautiful and so intelligent and so humble and so bad ass and so strategic and so BLEGH. like most of Knight’s characters, she’s a mary sue! everything she does is perfect and smart and no one sees it, not to mention she’s supremely bodacious 🙄

i was super interested in reading a reverse harem set in space, but Knight lacks the ability to fully develop such a complicated world (universe?). there’s a lot of telling, but no showing; we don’t get the name of Saffron’s home planet until she leaves it, but every weird alien she encounters gets a name drop. not to mention, all of her love interests are human in appearance! how boring is that?! there were some interesting relationships to explore, but there’s just time skips or all the actual development happens off page so we just see them all being obsessed with Saffron; it’s annoying. (i got to meet love interest #5 but apparently there are 6 so Yikes)

there’s ultimately no feeling of cohesiveness; it’s like Knight just sat down, keyboard smashed, and threw in some “plot details” when she felt like it, as a little treat.

i was reading the pages but not seeing them; i thought: well, i’ve powered through two of her other books i’m sure i could power through this one. but why waste the time? there are a lot of books to read and i wasn’t enjoying this one at all. i already suffered through den of vipers 😭

i didn’t even get to the spice in this one before calling it so if you make it that far…god speed.
