Still Life by Sarah Winman
3.0

3 descriptive stars to Still Life, a true love letter to Florence, Italy and found family.

~Stay put, my sweet, and thrive~

This book was very character driven, which is not typically what I gravitate to, but the rave reviews for this book convinced me to try it. I can't say I loved it, but it was beautifully written and had such a strong sense of place I felt like I was back in Florence, basking in the sun, having an espresso in the square and having all the fresh pasta possible.
*
These characters were quite the..well characters. I love Ulysses, Alys, Cress and of course Claude (the parrot), they were all so well written and developed I feel like I could have plucked them out of the page and had coffee with them. Other characters well...Peggy wasn't for me, I found her a bit flat in comparison to the others. Evelyn was also a very interesting character, and I adored when her and Ulysses found each other again - her character and arc was one of my favourites, but I wish we had more of them together.
*
So all of that to say - the characters were well done, the setting was honestly perfect and so vibrant, but I was bored a lot, it was a bit too much "slice of life" for my tastes and I found myself struggling to go back to it.

The writing and the setting are amazing and if you are a fan of character driven stories, pick this one up - you won't regret it.
