Read this for my university course and winded up doing a presentation on it! The protagonist of Esperanza tells her emotional and relatablely confusing coming of age story as a young Mexican-American girl through a series of vignettes. Rich with metaphors, poetic language and refreshingly unique writing, this text encapsulates what it is to be a young girl growing up in a dangerous world. Such a clever way of interrogating deep themes through the voice of an innocent and naive child, giving the text a hopeful and inspiring or depressing and upsetting feel, depending on how you take it.
