The Shutouts by Gabrielle Korn

adventurous dark emotional inspiring mysterious tense medium-paced

5.0

This novel......I loved every single page. A story about humanity, what it means to be interconnected, and the end of the world. When you meet other people, who could use your help, or who have challenges and need your help......what will you approach them with?  The reader will explore morality, moral competency, integrity, and acceptance.

In this dystopian LGBTQ novel, we are taken into a world of the future. The government has collapsed, there is a climate apocalypse. Many coastal cities are underwater, and the air has become to dry and the heat to hot to sustain long -many drown or have heat strokes.
Certain people are chosen, and are allowed to  live in a self-sustaining, climate controlled commune community, sealed from the outside world; with pure air and water, but it also has very stringent and strict rules. Those not chosen, wander the earth, barren and hot, and must somehow find a way to survive. Those inside don't like the many many rules, but know escape is to outside world, and they will not survive.

The story is told through two different viewpoints.....just before the apocalypse, and, after, in the year 2080. The different viewpoints bring the perspective of the world of "then" and "now", and the  vast differences  between the times. Queer and non-binary characters are represented. It shows how their representation had changed, over time. Very Interesting. Fantastic world and character building within this world.
I can't wait to read more from Gabrielle Korn. She has amazing talent and insight.
