V is for Virgin by Kelly Oram
5.0
Kelly Oram is definitely getting added to my favorite author column. I love the way she tells the stories. Her characters are always believable, smart, and well rounded. She has the ability to keep it fast paced without being either too shallow or too mired in details. V is for Virgin is the first half in a two part story. The next book, A is for Abstinence, is told from Kyle's POV and is said to be more of an "adult" book (sans uber detailed but still steamy sex scenes) since the characters are now in their early twenties.
But I digress, I liked this one and how it handled virginity in high school. Granted, for me it was ions ago but I chose to wait too. I'm not ashamed to admit that my husband is the only one I've been with but I recognize that's an anomaly nowadays. Even in the late 90s, early 00s, it was taboo to still be a virgin when you graduated high school. I found out later that I was labeled a tease by some of the guys because I refused to put out and wouldn't date a guy if I felt that was all he was after. I felt proud of Val for sporting her virginity almost like a badge of honor (even if her constant crying over EVERYTHING started to annoy me). I wasn't so brave and usually avoided the question altogether. I knew I'd get harassed. I think my favorite part was the way the book ended and wrapped up. It wasn't typical but it was true to life. Choosing to have sex is a big decision. Teen pregnancy is no joke. At least for girls. It can break some relationships like we saw here but can also strengthen them (also shown). It all depends on the persons involved. My niece is still quite young but once she comes of age and has to deal with this type of peer pressure, I hope she's as strong as Val and is willing to wait for the right guy. You only get to give up your v-card once. Better make it special and make sure the guy appreciates what you're giving him!
I look forward to starting A is for Abstinence (thank you Kindle Unlimited so I don't have to wait!) and I have no doubt I'll be unable to put that one down either.
