Hawking by Jim Ottaviani

5.0

Part biography and part primer on the last 100 years of cosmology and physics. I liked it quite a bit. The math got a bit complicated at parts, but it was explained well enough. For some strange reason, most of the narration was told in first person, even though Hawking himself was dead before the book was published and had no part in writing it.

I expected his the depiction of his degenerative motor neurone disease to be more tragic, but it seems glossed over, like it's just a fact of life. One minor tidbit I found interesting was that he only wrote A Brief History of Time to pay bills. Also, it amused me how frequently he made bets with fellow cosmologists over potential discoveries, with stakes like a subscription to Penthouse.
